For those of you who don’t know, a Rube Goldberg machine or device is a deliberately over-engineered machine that performs a very simple task in a very complex fashion, usually including a chain reaction. Since watching the Ok Go video for This Too Shall Pass (and ultimately posting a blog about it, found here) I have been trawling Youtube for some of the best, a small collection of them are detailed below:

1: Ok Go – This Too Shall Pass

Only fair to include the video that inspired me to find other Rube Goldberg machines, the OK Go video is hugely popular and is arguably one of the most successful viral music videos.

2. Honda Accord
I remember this advert being on television when I was younger, initially it was awesome, but after a 4 week advertising run it became hugely tedious, fun to watch again now though. This has undoubtedly had some help from some CGI.

3. Dibs
I have no idea what a Dib is, but I insisit that if I ever eat one this is the machine that mas to give it to me. What I love about this is that it doesn’t have a huge budget like the two videos above, its just some guys with clearly too much time on their hands. Love the mobile phone bit.

4. Mythbusters Rube Goldberg
I do love Mythbusters and as a special Christmas treat they made a Rube Goldberg machine for the fans utilizing the power of Mentos and Soda. Great video, but annoyingly low quality footage.

5. Japanese Rube Goldberg Contest
Where would we be without those crazy Japanese? This game show is actually a competition for the best Rube Goldberg machine, with such high stakes as the Rube Goldberg championship people are really pulling out all the stops….which in turn releases a ball….which fills up a cup with water….

Hope you enjoyed these, the blog post that inspired this can be found here.
